I cannot express how good these treats taste. I really wish one day they start selling these here in America too. I am not Japanese, nor have I been to Japan yet, so I never knew what these were until a few years back. One of my friends brought me a box of these on their way back from a vacation in Japan. “These cream-filled cakes are a Japanese delicacy made with care by TOKYO BANANA. Please take these delicious sweets home with you from Japan.” (tokyobanana.jp) Based on their website, there are other flavors and variations of this snack too.
Ever since I got a taste of this treat, I became hooked! I actually started looking for people around me who will go to Japan soon. And of course I would ask them to bring a few boxes back for me.
As these cream-filled cakes are a “delicacy”, they have a really short shelf life. If not I would have people bring me boxes and boxes of them. Not to mention they are not that cheap either, around $30 U.S per box from my memory? I even tried having a person we know that lives in Japan ship some to us, but by the time they got here, we had very little time to eat them because of the short expiration period on the cakes.
I remember seeing a few people selling them on amazon, but for double the price. If I go a long enough period without having any, I may order from one of these sellers. For now though, I’m not going to pay $60 for a box of treats. The best again for me, was to ask people I know who go to Japan, to buy some for me on their way back at the airport. =)
When people ask me to describe the taste them, it doesn’t sound too good. It is pretty much the softest “Castella” sponge cake on the outside, with a subtle banana tasting cream on the inside. Again, I know it doesn’t sound too good the way that I’m describing it, but I really really recommend trying this snack at least once to anyone who hasn’t tried it yet. 10 out of 10! D.I
