At the time of writing this post, I just finished watching Episode 11 of Memories of the Alhambra. I didn’t think I would like this series that much because this director’s (Ahn Gil-ho) previous series “W” was good, but a little hard to swallow at times. However, Memories of the Alhambra is really fun.
Starring Hyun Bin (Secret Garden) and Park Shin-Hye (Pinochio), the series goes back and forth between Korea, Granada Spain, and Augmented Reality. Yes, Augmented Reality. What is Augmented Reality, or AR? Ok, most people know what VR, or Virtual Reality is. AR is basically like a mix between Reality and VR. You are still in a real world environment, but certain objects in the real world environment are “Augmented” to create and AR environment. Like Pokemon Go.
Hyun Bin, who is the CEO of a major company, travels to Granada to meet the creator of a medieval AR game. The creator, played by Park Chan-Yeol, disappears, and Hyun Bin somehow gets entangled with Park Shin-Hye, who happens to be the struggling owner of the Hostel that Hyun Bin is staying at, and also the older sister of the games’ creator.
Hyun Bin plays the AR game himself, which requires a special Contact Lens. Things start to get out of hand, when Hyun Bin fights and wins a battle with an old friend in the game…..but the friend dies in reality. Hyun Bin then starts to see the AR characters coming after him even when he doesn’t have the contacts on. I will not give away anymore of the detail, and am curious to see how this story will unravel.
Throughout the whole series, you will hear the actual “Memories of the Alhambra” playing quite often. The game’s creator actually put his sister in the game as a character, Emma, who plays the song in the AR game. This TVN series can be seen on Netflix with subtitles.
